An Eye Lens is an Alchemical tool used to focus light sources, not dissimilar from a magnifying glass, but made with specific materials. An alchemist named Montengrin is popularly thought to have perfected the design, and is spoken of in numerous texts. It is unclear if Montengrin actually existed and was a well-known alchemist, or if his name simply became attached to a specific design and was repeated as a matter of custom.
A Montengrin’s Eye Lens uses leaded glass and a hand-worked copper loop. A smaller lens is attached which is used for sighting. The handle is arranged to hold the lens from above, which can make it difficult to properly hold and focus.
